I've recently discovered a very cool band called Epica. They are symphonic metal. They have the heavy double-kick drum and crunchy guitars, but also string arrangements and backing vocals that sound like something out of O Fortuna. They have 2 singers: the lead singer is a gorgeous redhead who has a voice like an angel, and the guitarist counterpoints with "demon-voice" vocals every so often. It's very cool-sounding, and not quite like anything I'd ever heard before.
If you're looking for something a bit less hardcore but still w/ some angst, I really like Disturbed. Their best album imo is 10,000 Fists.
Although they've been around for a good while now, Metallica's latest, Death Magnetic, is a great listen.
On the more gothy side of things, Ego Likeness is quite good. They're a husband and wife team, and they are artists to the core. Aside from the music they both write (from poetry to ghost stories to children's books), and he does artwork as well.
For some good boisterous Celtic rock, Dropkick Murphy's is always good, as is Flogging Molly.
And finally, for something recent that is unlike anything else out there and VERY intelligently done, check out the White Stripes.
