A long weekend…

Well, really it wasn’t that long. In fact, I wish it had been longer, as I didn’t get as much done as I planned, but enough thinking about that.

As I was blockaded in my sewing room for much of the weekend, I listened to a lot more music than usual. And as a confession? My music taste hasn’t really changed that much since, well, high school. This is kind of sad. Not to mention it was getting a bit repetitive…

So, people with better music taste than I, what should I be listening to that’s come out in the last 5-10 years, since I quit listening to the radio? My taste in music runs slightly angsty, leaning heavily on Tori Amos and Better than Ezra, but ranging as far as Disturbed/Korn/etc into the “harder” rock side of things… not so much into folksy, definitely not into country at ALL.

(And yes, I know about Pandora, but I’m hoping for more personal suggestions…)

Try Within Temptation, Dark New Day, Nickleback and Cold Play.

I do listen to Nickelback and *some* Coldplay (some of their songs annoy me for a reason I can't put my finger on). Will check out the other two, though. :)

nickelback is so much fun

[identity profile] tigersfan.livejournal.com 2009-02-09 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll second Within Temptation, and Cold Play. I'll also suggest Linkin Park, Radiohead, and Muse.

[identity profile] lady-guenievre.livejournal.com 2009-02-09 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
*Love* Evanescence. (In fact I have an entire playlist devoted to Tori, Sarah McLachlan, and Evanescence). And I have lots of Linkin Park too.

::notes Radiohead and Muse for further investigation::

You.

Out of my musicbox.

NOW.

(Hee!)

Try Pink.

[identity profile] lady-guenievre.livejournal.com 2009-02-10 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, "Angsty Women" makes the BEST sewing playlist.

Pink is not so angsty, but fun! ;-)

I was going to suggest Evanescence! I love them! And Imogen Heap is very interesting.

[identity profile] melaniesuzanne.livejournal.com 2009-02-09 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Frou Frou might fit in with your "breathy, emo" likes. I think you should also check out Guster, Ben Folds Five, and Poe. And perhaps a little Nina Simone for your inner jazzy/blues demon.

[identity profile] lady-guenievre.livejournal.com 2009-02-09 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved FrouFrou's cover of Hero on the Shrek soundtrack, but hadn't tracked down any of the rest of their stuff. And I had forgotten about Poe... will also have to check out Guster/Nina Simone.

[identity profile] redswami.livejournal.com 2009-02-11 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
Definitely Frou Frou and her alter ego, Imogen Heap (same person, different... managers? I think? Or maybe she's just solo for the latter). Imogen Heap's first album is very Tori-like, but she gets into her own style by her second album.

I'm partial to Apocalyptica, which you probably already know since they're more than five years old.

Also might be worth checking out:
Harder gothic rock: Lacuna Coil, Nightwish, Naio Ssaion
More pop rock: Alex Bach, Fallout Boy, Weezer (not new, but the new stuff they've come back with is pretty good)
Downright pop: Natasha Bedingfield, Finger Eleven, Panic! at the Disco, Tatu
Celtic: Capercaillie, Wolfstone

Hope there's something there to interest you.

I second the Guster. I also recommend Maroon 5 and Jason Mraz. My Genius button also suggests John Mayer and OAR. Oh! And Snow Patrol! And Eve 6 if you want to do a little-more early-2000's punk. I also the somewhat more obscure Dexter Freeebish and Duncan Sheik. And Fiona Apple/Dar Williams/ Vienna Teng/Ani DiFranco/Tracy Chapman for singer-songwriters. Moxy Fruvous too if you like BNL. And on the rock front, Carbon Leaf (which is Celtic-based and coming to Cat's Cradle next week), and the Tragically Hip.

I've personally mostly gotten into folk/Celtic like Nickel Creek or the Wailin' Jennys or Hem.

I get my newish music from the online radio show "Radio Paradise" which plays lots of stuff, including Bob Marley and 70's Classic Rock and Singer-songwriters and indie bands.

How about some Indigo Girls, They Might be Giants, Barenaked Ladies, Erika Badu, and Tracy Chapman?

[identity profile] fabricdragon.livejournal.com 2009-02-09 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
hmm. well the funny thing is? i suspect you would like some of the country music *I* like...
taylor swift "Romeo and Juliet" (which i think is called love story, or something)
anything by the Tractors. they do boogie woogie country. great piano

hmmmmm. most of the angsty stuff i know is older....

i am quite fond of nickel back, their latest made me spew my drink... i dont know the title but the lines "so much hotter when you never pull it out.... you look so much cuter with something in your mouth" sung in a growl on the radio is a bit of an attention getter (they say they are talking about a girl dancing with her thumb in her mouth. really)

Last five years... Try some of this:

Joan as Police Woman

TV on the radio

My Morning Jacket

Ray LaMontagne (because some day you'll get old like me)

Try that.

[identity profile] wombatgirl.livejournal.com 2009-02-09 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Stuff I've discovered in the last few years:
*The Whitlams
*Jonathan Coulton
*Franz Ferdinand
*Helium Vola
*Lily Allen
*Nellie McKay (first album, I didn't like her second much)

I don't know how well these will fit, but some may worth listen to a sample or two...

[identity profile] shalmestere.livejournal.com 2009-02-09 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd suggest Gothic Voices and Ensemble PAN, if you'd like some killer interpretations of fourteenth-/early-fifteenth-century music--but I don't think that's what you asked for :-)

How 'bout Bethany and Rufus, Jose Gonzalez or Vienna Teng?

[identity profile] pallasathene82.livejournal.com 2009-02-09 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Hooray another Vienna Teng fan!

[identity profile] sylke.livejournal.com 2009-02-09 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)

I second Red Fang.

I've recently discovered a very cool band called Epica. They are symphonic metal. They have the heavy double-kick drum and crunchy guitars, but also string arrangements and backing vocals that sound like something out of O Fortuna. They have 2 singers: the lead singer is a gorgeous redhead who has a voice like an angel, and the guitarist counterpoints with "demon-voice" vocals every so often. It's very cool-sounding, and not quite like anything I'd ever heard before.

If you're looking for something a bit less hardcore but still w/ some angst, I really like Disturbed. Their best album imo is 10,000 Fists.

Although they've been around for a good while now, Metallica's latest, Death Magnetic, is a great listen.

On the more gothy side of things, Ego Likeness is quite good. They're a husband and wife team, and they are artists to the core. Aside from the music they both write (from poetry to ghost stories to children's books), and he does artwork as well.

For some good boisterous Celtic rock, Dropkick Murphy's is always good, as is Flogging Molly.

And finally, for something recent that is unlike anything else out there and VERY intelligently done, check out the White Stripes.

I have examples of all of this if you'd like me to make you a mix to see what you might like out of all this.
