Lenten ponderings...

[Error: unknown template qotd]

For several years I've pondered giving up *something* for Lent. Not out of religious motivations, but just out of a... well, I'd try the full medieval lent experience except I'd probably starve. So this might be as close as I'll come. (Maybe someday when I'm less busy... I bet I *could* find stuff to eat, but time to figure it out AND cook it would be hard).

Anyway, so the thing I decided on was fried foods. Specifically deep-fried, not like, panfried or something, though things with breading are still Right Out. (Yes, [livejournal.com profile] soucyn, that means I won't be making Chicken Parmesan till after Easter).

Huh. I decided to give up the same thing: no fried foods. No doughnuts, french fries, onion rings, chicken fried steak. *sigh* It's going to be a long forty days, but I'm sure we'll both be healthier for it.

You just HAD to list out everything... ;-)

Gotta keep us honest. :)

I'm trying to figure out if scrambled eggs count. I usually nuke 'em in a mug, but cooking them in a pan is in that grey area.

I would think they don't. Honestly I'm thinking things like chicken (without breading) that gets sauteed in a pan doesn't count either - really, this is an effort to eliminate breading from my life. ;-)

Now French toast... *there* is a gray area.

It seems that deep dried food is right out, but pan-fried food is a gray area you have yet to determine. But pan-fried isn't usually breaded.

No French Fries or Fried Chicken or any yummy goodness from fast food? Oh the horror!

Actually, I should try this myself since my persona would have given up eating meat and other things I should research for Lent.

Maybe I'll have a nice sirloin steak for dinner tonight. :)

I figure I can eat burgers, or grilled chicken, but not fries. Not fries is bad enough...

For several formative years of my life, I gave up television for Lent. Now, I no longer give things up, but instead take things on. Taking on volunteer work, taking on the responsibility to help others. That's what I do for Lent.

I once had Chicken Parm, baked, with ground pine nuts instead of breading. I highly recommend it!

When I make Chicken (or eggplant) Parm, I bake it.

I expect I'm being a Bad Influence, and if so, I apologize.

I do like pine nuts, rather a lot….

Pine nuts are AWESOME.

According to Peter Brears, pan frying and deep frying are entirely different things. But he also writes about eating roast beaver tail in Lent, so YMMV.
