Blame Livia (it's usually a good plan).

So [livejournal.com profile] harleenquinzell and I were talking the other day - perhaps Friday? and I spent a large amount of time kvetching about how my lack of planning combined with 12th Night and Ymir had led to a 3rd year in a row with out a Pentathlon entry for KASF. (2008 I displayed random food from the 2 feasts I was doing in 6 weeks that KASF fell in between, 2009 I went and schmoozed and judged and displayed nothing). This was not the first time I've expressed this particular complaint; however, everyone ELSE I mentioned this to said "Be sane, you don't have time to put something together".

Enter Livia, who was planning on putting together something fairly quickly because she's crazy like that.

Crazy is contagious. As is the realization that I *do* have a couple of projects that I put a reasonable amount of research into already done.

So....

Entry 1: Heraldic Silk Houppelande. Done (might go back and tweak the attachment of one sleeve) and docs done (pending a few comments from the gallery). Yay!

Entry 2: Coral paternoster. Done, need to iron tassel and do docs.

Entry 3: Wheat pudding - Well, the recipe's picked... and I have all the comparative sources - so we'll call that half done.

Entry 4: Another food from the same manuscript - still deciding on this one.

Entry 5: Painted silk banner - this one's gonna be fun - I'm using the silk painting techniques in Cennini just to see how they work - I suspect that it won't flow at ALL, but may still be attractive...

10 days left...

My dear, you're crazy ;)

Question on the pudding -- is it sweet or savory?

[identity profile] lady-guenievre.livejournal.com 2010-02-23 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Haven't done the redaction yet; the way it's spiced you could probably argue for sweet, at least that'd be more suitable for a modern palette. That said, similar recipes are usually served plain/savory with venison.

[identity profile] ymasen.livejournal.com 2010-02-23 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
hmm... serving it with venison makes me think kinda a take on dressing, though. Dressing like my mom makes that's more like a very squishy bread and not stovetop type thing.

[identity profile] lady-guenievre.livejournal.com 2010-02-23 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah - I've made a plainer version of this, that's more like a... slightly egg thicked risotto, but the interesting thing about this one is that you add starch to it as well as the eggs and milk, so you're basically creating a custard around the cooked wheat.

[identity profile] ymasen.livejournal.com 2010-02-23 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
ooh, that sounds oddly nommy.

I just really like wheat... wheat pudding makes me happy. lol

[identity profile] ayeshadream.livejournal.com 2010-02-23 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh, that sounds fabulous! I recently redacted a wheat starch based pudding from an Italian manuscript (I'm attempting to blog my way through all of it for fun) and it came out lovely.

[identity profile] lady-guenievre.livejournal.com 2010-02-23 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Following your accounts of that one made me more likely to try this one, honestly - it's in Le Viviendier, and it's almost as if someone took frumenty and amydoun and decided to combine the two. Weird, but the fun thing is that it has really specific amounts (for a medieval recipe) even of the spices...

[identity profile] ayeshadream.livejournal.com 2010-02-23 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooooh, I can't wait to see how it all turns out.

Please post piccies of your entries and how the recipes worked out!

I love the idea of a Pentathlon! I was planning on challenging myself to do 5 entries based on my persona, but they reduced the numbers of entries at Kingdom to 3 max to allow for more compeditors.

[identity profile] lady-guenievre.livejournal.com 2010-02-23 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, y'all DO have a much bigger kingdom, I think...how many people are in An Tir? Atlantia's only a couple thousand or thereabout...

[identity profile] ayeshadream.livejournal.com 2010-02-23 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
We are pretty rediculously ginormous both in terms of land mass and headcount. We often have big fighting events with that many attendees.

I'm not sure how many members/ non-members we have kingdom wide though, now I'm curious. :)

I'm looking forward to seeing your entries! (Particularly the Cennini silk painting one...) Have you let Martelle know you plan to enter? That will help her prepare your judging packet ahead of time.

[identity profile] lady-guenievre.livejournal.com 2010-02-23 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I filled out the form yesterday. :)

[identity profile] salviati.livejournal.com 2010-02-23 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay!

[identity profile] martelvonc.livejournal.com 2010-02-24 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
I'm here and I'll be ready! lol! :-)

I would really love to see pics of how the Cenninni silk painting turns out. I've thought about playing with that myself but haven't gotten around to it... Too many other irons in the fire.

[identity profile] lady-guenievre.livejournal.com 2010-02-23 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I had thought about doing a scroll or something bt decided this would be more interesting. I have no real artistic skill, drawing wise, so figured I'll make up in "different" what I lack in "good"... ;-)

[identity profile] harleenquinzell.livejournal.com 2010-02-23 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey don't blame me. It took all of ten minutes for you to decide to do it!

[identity profile] baronessadriana.livejournal.com 2010-02-23 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
And I am sure she twisted your arm really good too. ;)

[identity profile] lady-guenievre.livejournal.com 2010-02-23 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Err... oh right, ow! ow, my arm!
(thanks for the reminder... ) ::giggle::

[identity profile] ladyaneira.livejournal.com 2010-02-23 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Woo, you GO! :-)

[identity profile] lady-guenievre.livejournal.com 2010-02-24 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
Heh. This won't be NEARLY as cool as the St. Catherine's entry. But it's at least entertaining - I was hitting the "it's after Ymir and I'm done with my list" slump...

[identity profile] sirinde.livejournal.com 2010-02-24 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
oooh! Exciting. I'd love to see how the banner works. I'd offer to help but... well February *is* the new November.

[identity profile] lady-guenievre.livejournal.com 2010-02-24 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
::hugs:: But in March we can start making Pennsic Plans...

(and *I* have no idea how the banner works. thus the experimentation part).

[identity profile] martelvonc.livejournal.com 2010-02-24 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
I like crazy! Come on out. I'll leave the light on for ya!

See you there!

I'd love to know how the Cennini silk painting works out. I have been doing block printing from Cennini recently and am entering that in our big A&S competition in about a month.

[identity profile] lady-guenievre.livejournal.com 2010-02-25 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I did some test swatches last night, and so far it's...odd. By the time you get the size and the gesso onto the silk, it becomes basically the texture of paper. (May try thinning both of them down somewhat). I think the stiffening *might* have been desirable, though, given the way some of the banners hang in pictures...at least I can argue that direction, lol.
