Last weekend was Crusades - this was WAY fun.  High points included getting [livejournal.com profile] nikulai's shirt done, dinner with [livejournal.com profile] syrrichard and [livejournal.com profile] alienor, interesting conversations with [livejournal.com profile] kfitzwarin and of course, fabric shopping in Philly at JoMar with Maddalena and Athos.  Low points were the ridiculous time of night we got home Monday morning and a certain Royal Peer acting with a little less grace than one would hope... of course, given who it was, this isn't a surprise so why am I complaining?

Since all the fabric shopping, though, I've been rather busily plotting projects - as I've complained about many times, Girard's and my wardrobes are NOT where they should be, and I now have both fabric and time (since the event season is winding down a bit). Project diaries (yes, plural!) to commence! (Still need a camera, though!).

I'm still glad you like it, next time I promise the neck will fit!

We're suffering from the same wardrobe issues; too little, some of what we have is inaccurate, etc. Sigh....

Somehow that makes me feel a bit better, since you've been in much longer than I.

And really, I'm not even sure how much of a wardrobe I should *have*. Obviously, I think I want to own more clothing than the average medieval person (wearing the same dress to every event gets old!) but at the same time, I'm not sure how often ye-old-average-castle-owner would get new clothing, and how long they would keep it? I mean, I'm not talking about fancy robes of state or what have you so much as just... *clothing*.

There's a couple of factors there. It took me a while (maybe 10 years?) to get *focused* on a period and on doing things well/correctly - it just wasn't as big a deal when I joined. My first decent 14th C. outfits were made in the very late 80's/very early 90's (actually before a lot of folks down here were doing 14th C). Then I went through a period right around my Laurelling where I was relatively inactive (mostly-non-SCA boyfriend, new non-SCA hobby that occupied weekends). Then I put on a lot of weight. So right now, I have a wardrobe of about 5 gowns - how sad is that?

My usual (practical) goal is to have enough clothing to get through a weeklong event without over-wearing the same clothes. I'm not one of these 2-3 outfits per day types - I figure if I have enough layers, I can re-wear many of them in different combinations.

One of the things I'd like to work on over the next little while is having more upper-class, less practical clothing. We'll see if I can stand it or not....*grin*

Down with practicality, up with froofiness! woot! :-)

Yeah, that's sorta my take on the situation, especially these days. I'm a little cranky-worried about making big froofy clothes at this weight but we'll see - I'm hoping to ditch some of it by Xmas and then we'll see where we stand.

Hmm, well, if you're doing houppes, it shouldn't change that much... I mean, depending on the fabric, as long as your shoulder width doesn't change too much, everything else should just fall into extra pleats if you lose weight, right?

Yeah, although she had some good stuff this weekend on fitted gowns and the Burgundian V-neck and stuff, so I guess that's what I'm hesitating on.

Ahh, yeah, that was a VERY spiffy lecture, though I felt kind of bad when I went to see it b/c there was a lady from out west (An Tir?) who had a paper online that very liberally used info from it so it wasn't as original as I would have liked.

I didn't realize that you were planning on going that late though - of course, the nice thing about doing Burgundian V-necks is that you don't have to deal with enough fabric for sleeves and such... if you go Burgindian though, what do you plan on doing the belt out of? I've always had issues getting them stiff enough...
