More musing on my own bad habits

So I've realized I have even more self-destructive tendencies than I thought, other than just my semi-ADD nature. Or maybe everyone does this, and it's not just me.

Do you ever find yourself going longer and longer without doing something *purely* because you're embarassed / frustrated with yourself for not having done it in the first place? ie calling a friend, or cleaning your house, or... ::insert task here:: Not because the task would have originally been *bad*, of course, but for whatever reason you didn't do it and now you made the situation worse... ::sigh::

One of these days I'll learn to not do that.

Oh yes. Many times. (::eyes messy room::)

[identity profile] liadethornegge.livejournal.com 2005-06-08 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I believe my answer to that is an emphatic: hell Yes.

When you find the trick to breaking the vicious circle, let me know. I promise to do the same...

me lots too

[identity profile] bunnyjadwiga.livejournal.com 2005-06-09 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's my besetting habit. That's why when I just cleaned out my car I found stuff there from Pennsic. *sigh*

I shouldn't admit this, but I can go one better on that. I was rooting around in my trunk last week and found some stuff from Pennsic *before* last - now admittedly there's a reason (it had gotten packed in with the spare tire - very small car, had to conserve space) but still!

[identity profile] apollonia.livejournal.com 2005-06-08 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I do that ALL THE TIME!!!!! I hate that I do it, but I keep doing it. Like with my research paper. I've had 2 different In A Phoenix Eye's to prepare it for, 2 years in-between them. Is it done? Is it even started yet? Nope. And I mentioned to people that I was going to get going on it, and now I am embarrassed because I haven't followed through.

Some days I just want to beat myself about the head...

[identity profile] lady-guenievre.livejournal.com 2005-06-09 12:17 pm (UTC)(link)
That doesn't help either. ::giggle:: Don't ask me how I know that... ;-)

[identity profile] ciorstan.livejournal.com 2005-06-08 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Are we, like, sekrit long-lost twins or something?

I find myself having done that all the time. And I resolve never to do it again, but...

[identity profile] widowspeak.livejournal.com 2005-06-08 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Right there with you, hon. You're not alone. *glances furtively about her kitchen* Yeah, SO with you. :P

You have no idea.

OK, maybe you do. :}

[identity profile] ornerie.livejournal.com 2005-06-08 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
nope, definatley not you. and I pride myself on being disgustingly well adjusted.

my avoidance? the doctor. how's that for stupid?

[identity profile] lady-guenievre.livejournal.com 2005-06-09 02:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, doctors are scary. They poke you with needles and stuff.

[identity profile] ornerie.livejournal.com 2005-06-09 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
its worse than that...needles dont phase me.

I haent been doing what she told me to do and I'm feeling like a lame-o about it.

(told you it was stupid! I yell at myself all the time about it but taht just makes it worse...)

bad habits...

[identity profile] lady-richende.livejournal.com 2005-06-09 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
I can definitely understand and empathize with you on this one. I think it comes of wanting everything to be perfect, knowing that said state of perfection will probably *never* exist, so it becomes easier to do nothing that to make attempt and fail to live up to one's own expections, which are usually a lot higher than anyone else's expectations of you. If you do nothing, you can't fail ... Someone very wise said to me once "Never let doing something *good* get in the way of doing something *well*" ... Hint, hint ...

Hope that helps motivate you somewhat, it does me somedays...

Yeah... I should write Cariadoc's maxim (Don't let the best be the enemy of the good) on every surface of my house, I think... ;-)

just kidding

It's not a bad idea, just don't use lipstick, the stain never comes out. LOL.

[identity profile] ealdthryth.livejournal.com 2005-06-09 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
All the time!

[identity profile] azpapillion.livejournal.com 2005-06-09 12:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Its called procrastination and its just one of those things that takes an extra step (for me) when I start getting into that situation. I just need to sit down and say to myself, "I cannot avoid this any longer" and start/do it. I'm having that issue with Thank you cards... :)

[identity profile] lady-guenievre.livejournal.com 2005-06-09 12:10 pm (UTC)(link)
The funny thing is that usually once I start something, I'm like, "Dude, that wasn't hard. Self, why were you being such a git?"

[identity profile] azpapillion.livejournal.com 2005-06-09 12:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I say the same thing! :D

[identity profile] lady-guenievre.livejournal.com 2005-06-09 12:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh! and Miss Manners says you have a year on wedding gifts, as far as thank you notes go, so you're still "etiquettely correct". Afterall, you're a newlywed, you should have Better Things to do... ;-)

[identity profile] azpapillion.livejournal.com 2005-06-09 12:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I am so glad to hear that and have had better things to do :), but still want those people to know how much we appreciate their thoughtfullness... :) Sigh of relief has been breathed - I've been under the old adage of one month... :)

[identity profile] zihuatanejo.livejournal.com 2005-06-09 12:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh God yes.

I havn't called my BEST FRIEND since January... because now I'm so embarrassed. What would I say on the phone? "Hey BEST FRIEND, 'tis I, who haven't called you in SIX MONTHS, calling you now just to see how your divorce, three kids, new job, etc. are doing..."

Argh. I know she wouldn't care, after all, she hasn't called me either and she is, after all, the aforementioned best friend whom I've known since kindergarten, but still. I'm ashamed.

I do the same thing with bills, too. Which are much more damaging to put off, and yet I do it every month. And cleaning the litter boxes. Arguably the most damaging of all. Poor kittles.

[identity profile] lady-guenievre.livejournal.com 2005-06-09 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Jeez, it's the attack of the identical Jennifers. There's a *reason* the bills are on automatic payment...otherwise I come home and there's no water!

And you should call her. I've completely lost touch with people after a while, doing that. :/

[identity profile] zihuatanejo.livejournal.com 2005-06-09 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
One of these days we'll do the automatic payment thing. Something else I'm putting off.

I do need to call her. I'm going to make it a goal for this week. Through a complicated system involving a divorce and three kids under the age of 4, she's only available to talk on Sunday nights. And you know how it is, if you miss a Sunday it's a whole week until the next Sunday, oops, missed it again, guess I better wait another week... it's a vicious cycle :-)

[identity profile] edela-evertsz.livejournal.com 2005-06-09 03:18 pm (UTC)(link)
at least you know your best friend's scheduel. I called her last year. Things weren't going so well for her. Other friends had died, her sis married (not bad, just busy), and she wasn't sure of her job. She never calls me anymore. We only spoke for a few minutes. I'll call her now.

[identity profile] edela-evertsz.livejournal.com 2005-06-09 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
This sucks!! Her old roomate still lives at the number, but she's moved on. I have no way of contacting her. Don't lose touch.

[identity profile] evan-page.livejournal.com 2005-06-09 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Definitely. I'm just starting to study for my first big exam of the summer... that I have tomorrow. Procrastinators of the world unite! (on of these days)

[identity profile] nikulai.livejournal.com 2005-06-09 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Ya know... I meant to post a comment earlier... and then I hadnt so I got embarassed and well... you know how it is *hangs head*

[identity profile] llelwyn.livejournal.com 2005-06-09 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I do that all the time. ALL the time. *sigh*

I did that with my gender. it was very bad. I've missed out on many years of being a hottie and I regret putting it off. Happiness now though. :)

Welcome! Have we met in real life? (Looked at your journal but don't recognize your name, on the other hand, I'm ***terrible*** at names...)

Either way, nice to have more readers...

I'm Iseulte from Tir-y-Don. I don't think we've actually met but I ran across your LJ from another user's list some time ago and enjoy reading your entries.

Isn't this how everyone works...
I always mean to send 'thankyous' promptly. I have piles of stationary and stamps and it just never gets done... Then I remember and it's a month or more later... I find if I don't write them right away it's never happening! Airports and planes saved me from much grief with wedding thankyous!
