Guess what? I just got back from fighter practice!  Go me! (well, technically I'm writing this after a sub from Jimmy John, most of an episode of The Practice and one of my husband's notoriously strong G&T's (with another on the way! woot! not that I usually have two drinks on a weeknight, but then I finished a project at work today and alcohol goes well with endorphins).

So practice was fun - as it turned out there were only Chow and my dear husband there, and I ended up just fighting Nick and hitting the pell some, but it was FUN. I don't know why I haven't gone in so long, I think I was just being silly.  Though getting hit will certainly take some getting used to. It's weird - the first time I tried this, getting hit didn't bother me. This time it was a little different, I don't know why.  Still, though apparently I think really light shots hurt, it wasn't that bad, and it was something I could certainly get used to.

Weirdly enough, though, I'm oddly conflicted about fighting, at events, anyway.. fighting is a BLAST in terms of it's sheer fun. And yet, so is having N fight for me! and somehow having him salute a me that's in armor and not "pretty" and feminine, etc, is just wrong, somehow... (though I'm working on having the world's most feminine armor, given the helm and the intensely BLUE armor).

Eh, well, maybe eventually I will authorize, we'll see - given this was a 1st practice in 3 years, I don't really think I need to worry about it at the moment...

If you want to make sure your armor is particularly feminine, just make it anatomically correct (or at least suggestive), like all the super heroines.

Do what I do: Avoid tournaments, fight in melees.

Well.... I was trying to go for some degree of historical correctness, just make the *details* a bit femme. IE the helm of cuteness...

And I may in fact do that - with luck I might auth before Pennsic. I just hope I don't get stepped on!

Melees for armored; that's about the most fun you can have standing up.

Well that's a fargin lie...you oughta know better. Although, shaggin standin up might lead to dancin'. SO it might be a sin.

Are you going to have time before you wander off to grad school to come out to practice sometime?

If you get that figured out, send me a clue, will you?

My whole thing is I've internalized a bit too much of the whole "cult-of-chivalry" thing, and so has Nick for that matter. Heck, when I wore boy-garb @ KASF he said something to the effect of "That's really cute. Just don't wear it when I'm fighting for you, as that would make my brain hurt". So if boy-garb screws up the... mindset, for lack of a better word, then what does armor do to it? and since my favorite moment at any fighting event is when N salutes me before his first fight, well...

You looked pretty good when throwing blows at the post. It just takes a bit of practice to do the same thing on a fighter. So don't get discouraged! Before long you will be throwing blows at fighters like you've been doing this for years. :)

The trick is always to learn to throw blows like you've been doing it for years, without actually haveing been doing for all those years.

You did well. I figured you were pretty much starting from scratch. You didn't have any horrible "newbie fighter problems". We need to work on your power generation and your defense, but that's all stuff that comes with time. Keep going to practice and don't let the stumbling blocks disuade you.

I was *completely* starting from scratch, though I've listened to people talk about fighting too much, which made things get confusing. I should go read the Bellatrix/Oldcastle books just so I know what you're talking about, though...

'Course, with me fighting too now you HAVE to get a pell done...
