I'm not going to subject you to the memory meme... but I am about to do something that has never appeared on this journal before... and probably won't again. Because really, video is killing the 'net.

However, I've been doing lots of embroidery lately, and while the product is lovely, my brain goes ENTIRELY too many weird places if I do it without some distraction. Enter lots of TV. And one of the niftiest things we've been watching is Planet Earth, which is this new thing off the discovery channel.

Now, the problem with this show is that it's narrated by Sigorney Weaver, which, well, wouldn't be so bad, except the writers had a bad case of superlativitis. EVERY thing they show is the "biggest" or "most populous" or...yeah, you could turn this into a drinking game, take a sip every time you hear a superlative and you... well, let's just say you'd be stitching REALLY crooked by the end.

However... it's worth watching. Apparently they spent 2,000 days shooting various rare things... like lions hunting elephants and other things, but cute and vicious. Like this: (ever seen a 20 ft Great White Shark 12 ft above the water? didn't think so (it's about 3/4 of the way through...)

Heh. I like the superlative drinking game. There's also the Nature Is Not Sentimental drinking game where she hints that the adorable baby animal is about to meet some horrible (and thankfully off-screen) end.

I wince whenever she says that... poor little cute and fluffies.

I was watching the "Plains" episode last night, and they practically broke my brain - adorable bebbe geese dying to feed adorable bebbe foxes. I was sitting on the couch going "Geesy... foxy... geesy... foxy..."

Yeah.

The problem with the superlative drinking game is that it spirals out of control.

"That's the best beer I've ever had..." drink.
"That's the biggest sip I've taken yet..." drink.
"I've been drinking longer than the rest of you..." drink.
"This is the most drunkenist I've ever been..." pass out.

Planet Earth, huh? I've really been enjoying watching the series on Discovery. I'm thinking about investing in the DVDs of it when those come out.

Oh, my. I watched it. I will never swim in the ocean. Forget Jaws...this is creepy. They almost fly!

It's from S. Africa, so i think we are safe as long as we don't dip ourselves in seal blood first...

Damn! The ritual dipping myself in seal blood bit is my favourite part about swimming.

The DVD has been offered by Discovery for $79.95. I plan to get it for Senior Nephew.

My favorite clip is the monkey daintily running through water that looks for all the world like a prissy girl.

Wow, that's some pricy DVDs...tempting, though. And I can't blame them for the price, really, having seen some of the making-of bits...

If you get the chance you should watch this on HD. It was very awesome.

If I knew anyone with an HD, yes. I don't think I do, though...

I think it is some sort of canon law that states 'thou shalt hire a narrator from 1)Australia 2) South Africa

Famous Americans will be tolerated, but bonus points awarded for famous Brits such as David Attenbourough.

Oh Nos!

"Because really, video is killing the 'net."

Is this a bandwidth thing? or a personal taste thing?
Since I don't have a TV here I love internet vids..

Am I an enabler!

Personal taste thing. In some ways it's good for the bandwidth thing, as it helps ensure people want fat pipes everywhere...

But the thing is that I have a really, REALLY short attention span ... so I'm not patient enough to watch most video, and I also tend to surf the web with the computer muted... so the existence of all these amusing videos tends to mean people don't bother to write funny stuff anymore. ::shrug::
(The written word is an exception mostly because I read very quickly.)

Was the David Attenborough? My brother and I learned from his shows how to narrate nature shows...we used to narrate our drives through national parks. :)

And WOW.

I haven't actually listened to this version - I think I read something about the European version being narrated by Attenborough, the American one, like I said, is Sig. Weaver...

Interesting video. But Great Whites aren't only in South African waters, they are also in Australian/New Zealand waters, Hawaiian waters, Californian waters, Florida/Caribbean waters and also in the Mediteranean and Adriatic Seas and the Indian Ocean also.

There is an interesting Nature documentary on the "Deadly Triangle", a great white shark infested area off the coast of Northern California, where they also prey on seals, sea lions, and otters. However, for those of you who hated seeing the shark eat the seal, there is a shot of a great white shark being eaten by a killer whale. The predator became prey. Go Shamu!
