So I went to Calontir this weekend, which was QUITE fun. The trip down was uneventful; TSA doesn't mind needles or small scissors, so I could work on the Embroidery Project of Doom; AirTran has XM radio on their planes now, which rocks; and a lovely man named Ulf met me at the gate with a sign (!!). Met [livejournal.com profile] wombatgirl, and [livejournal.com profile] valkyr8, and [livejournal.com profile] antigonetheban; taught two classes, met an Oldcastle cousin (Taidhg), and got to have a long conversation with Duke Cariadoc (!!). I was surprised at the size of the event, only 90-something people, but there were still people from 7 kingdoms there (!!), and it was a Calontirii Royal Progress. There was lots of food-geeking, and not enough embroidery, and I got to have dinner with [livejournal.com profile] intrepida. All in all, VERY much worth the plane ticket.

On the way back, I proceeded to prove I am in fact a ditz - Atlanta airport is huge, and one does NOT have time to mosey and/or stop for cheese fries on the way to your gate if your gates are in different terminals and there's only an hour between flights. Somehow, space kitten that I am, I managed to completely miss this fact, and missed my flight. Even more embarassing was that I sat there for a little while, calmly waiting for a flight that had already left and I didn't realize it... lucky for me, the  next flight wasn't full. However, it did mean I got a new entry in the "It's a tiny world book", in that when walking back to the other gate to catch the "replacement" flight back to Durham,  I ran into a chick from high school that I hadn't seen since we graduated. Go figure.

Since the pie class ran out of handouts, and I told people to check the website for it, I spent most of yesterday updating my website - look in the cooking and projects sections for updates. I'd love feedback, if anyone actually goes to see it. ::grin::

Tonight will be fun - [livejournal.com profile] 3_purple_irises and Lukas are coming over to help me get my underdress sewn for Crown, while I frantically finish embroidering the overgown. Meanwhile, [livejournal.com profile] nikulai and [livejournal.com profile] soucyn are in charge of dinner...

BTW - if you're interested, the lovely Ulfr has his own LJ - it's [livejournal.com profile] rhino_boy.

OK, now I'm *really* curious about the origin of the names...

I shouldn't say because it's probably a lot more interesting before you get the actual reason. :)

I'm wombatgirl because I did a study abroad trip in college to Australia and decided wombats were some of the neatest creatures ever to walk this earth. I got my hotmail account soon after that, and chose wombatgirl. It's stuck.

He's Rhino_boy, because he likes Rhinos and I think he was trying to do cutesy matching names.

That and the time people in another web group of hers refered to me as wombatboy.

Oh wow, very well placed and superdeserving exclamation points! (!!) Glad to hear it was such a great time!

And in the words of our dear Izzy: I like pie! :-) and am supercurious about the making thereof in period ... all of my pie fu is inherited, starting at the had-to-stand-on-a-chair-to-reach-the-kitchen-counter age, and I'm keen on comparing and contrasting family with period. Thanks for posting!

Some of the skills carry over, some very much do not. And a few of the the concepts - like Sabina Welserin's hot-water-and-melted-fat crust - are ENTIRELY counter-intuitive to the keep-everything-cold approach of most modern crusts.

Anyway, let me know if you have any questions re: the handout...

I'm bringing a dessert to share with dinner tonight. I got bored this afternoon and was inspired by something Paula Dean made. It was really easy. I hope you all are in the mood for chocolate.

The pie info looks fascinating! I have been thinking recently that I probably need to learn to make things akin to pasties. Every now and again I have to be up and running around before I am awake enough to want to eat- and yet if I do not eat something, my blood sugar tanks and it is bad. So I've been buying those stupid "Lean Pockets" about the only benefits of which are that they nuke in 2 minutes and aren't horribly high-fat. Therefore, I've been contemplating making an alternative. This looks like it will help- thanks!

Well, the nice thing is that if you're not doing the medieval thing you can put potatoes in them, and end up with "stew in a pie"... or hashbrowns and sausage in a pie, if you're doing breakfast.

They're really good for leftover meat, too.

I've got to ask: Who did you see at ATL?

Teesha - used to be Boyd, has apparently married a dashing Air Force officer now but I didn't catch her new last name.
